If you have permanent teeth missing from your smile, you’ve likely heard about the wonders of dental implants. That they they are the best looking, most functional, and most lifelike tooth-replacement option (all true).
And maybe you’ve visited your dentist, full of excitement, only to be told that your jawbone is not healthy enough to support a conventional implant’s titanium post.
We have some good news for you. If you are not a candidate for full-sized dental implants, you may very well be a candidate for mini dental implants. These offer the benefits of their larger counterparts, but are appropriate even if you’ve suffered bone loss in your jaw.

How Dental Implants Work
Conventional dental restorations sit on your gums, so they don’t mimic the structure of your natural teeth. A dental implant, on the other hand, does just that. It is an artificial tooth root constructed of titanium that is surgically inserted into your jawbone. As you heal, the bone grows around the titanium post, affixing it permanently into place. After this process, called osseointegration, is complete, we affix a connector post called an abutment and finally a beautiful, custom-made dental crown.
People love this restoration because it feels, functions, and looks just like a real tooth. The strength of your bite is restored, and you can enjoy a full and varied diet. It also promotes bone health by routing the force of your bite into the jawbone.
Missing Teeth Lead to Bone Loss
A conventional dental implant requires a thick, healthy jawbone to support it. Unfortunately, if you’ve gone a while without teeth in your mouth, or with a bridge or other non-implant restoration, you may have suffered bone loss as a result. Radiation treatments and certain medications can also compromise your bone health to the point that you can not get a full-sized dental implant.
There are ways around this. Dr. Ellsworth may be able to restore your jawbone with a bone graft.
Or we may be able to give you your smile back with a mini dental implant. Mini implants offer lots of the benefits of conventional implants. They are strong, secure in your mouth, and natural looking in appearance. They even have a few advantages over their full-sized counterparts.
- You don’t have to wait months for your jaw to heal before getting your gorgeous, custom-made permanent replacement teeth. Dr. Ellsworth can often attach them the very day of the initial surgery!
- The procedure is much less invasive than for full-sized dental implants. You will heal much more quickly and experience less discomfort.
- They are less expensive than regular dental implants.
- You will not need a bone graft before receiving your mini implants.
If you are missing teeth and have suffered bone loss as a result, we may be able to restore your smile with implant technology after all.
