Orthodontics is a fascinating field. It's changed a little bit over the years. It used to be you would take little Johnny in for the look, and when little Johnny was 11, 12, 13, 14, take out some teeth to make some space because his teeth were all crowded, and throw braces on. Those braces would be on there for three years, and with headgear, to try and close the spaces with the teeth that were extracted and things like that.
It's changed now that we're trying to become much more proactive in how we do braces. We like to catch the problem before the problem becomes real big. If we can work with a younger individual's growth, so that the growth is working in our favor, as opposed to take what mother nature's given us at 14 and try and change it completely, we find that we get a much better result. So rather than wait 'til mother nature's done and the growth is finished, and force it do something else, we try and work with what's going on, and work with the growth factors, and work with how the face is changing and how the dentition is changing.
If we can catch things early, we can do some little things in the beginning to make the braces part down the road way shorter, no extractions, a year, year and a half, instead of three years and taking teeth out, and we get better results. When you get to keep all your teeth and you can have them and have a nice, full smile, it's a better result, and the results are more stable. Retention is not a necessary ... Retainers aren't as necessary. They're always necessary, but they, things tend to want to stay in place a lot more when interceptive, early treatment is performed.
At Family Dental of Spokane Valley, we believe the earlier you start thinking about orthodontics, the better! Top-notch Spokane Valley, WA dentist Dr. Craig Ellsworth believes in the idea of interceptive orthodontics: scheduling your child’s first orthodontic screening by age 7. With Invisalign, you or your child will wear sturdy aligners made of a clear plastic material for 20 to 22 hours a day. You remove them to eat, and to brush and floss. So no more food stuck in wires, which makes Invisalign aligners simpler to keep clean.
You will change aligners every week, or however often Dr. Craig Ellsworth determines is needed. The aligners gently shift your teeth into their new and straighter position over time.
Like Invisalign, ClearCorrect uses a series of clear plastic aligners worn for 20 to 22 hours a day. They apply gentle pressure to your teeth, shifting their position. Dr. Craig Ellsworth can discuss the differences between Invisalign and ClearCorrect with you, including cost. But here are some key similarities:
- Because they are made of clear plastic, they are practically invisible
- They can be removed, so you can take them out while eating or for dental hygiene
- Both are fitted by Dr. Craig Ellsworth, for a perfect fit
- Thanks to the absence of wires and brackets, most people find them more comfortable than conventional braces
Six Month Smiles
Six Month Smiles are similar to conventional braces in how they work. But unlike conventional braces, Six Month Smiles are made of clear brackets and tooth-colored wires. So you won’t have a mouth full of metal in your selfies! Some of the other advantages:
- Because they are similar to conventional braces, the results may be more predictable
- Treatment typically takes no more than six months
- They use gentler pressure than conventional braces
