The actual term "general dentistry" has a comprehensive meaning. The meaning is you do things in a general sense. In other words, you do kind of everything. You're not specializing in one little small area or a different small area. You do a lot of everything, you have to know a lot about everything.
The interesting thing about general dentistry is that I get to do a lot of different things. A lot of those things are very, very, interesting to me, and I enjoy doing them. So, when somebody comes in and has a need, I've gone through al to of training and al to of education so that I can treat that need and don't need to send them somewhere else. We try to do most everything we do here in the office. We try to avoid having to send somebody elsewhere. People don't like to go somewhere else. Once they feel comfortable somewhere, they like to stay there and the only time I really have to send somebody elsewhere is when it's very, very complicated case, or if I think it's going to be extremely difficult or if there's some other complications, but for the most part we're able to do most things right here, because we are continually being educated on how to ... the updates, and the training, and way beyond the dental school stuff, we're into secondary and tertiary courses on this. We're constantly taking classes and updates.
Our objective is to try and do as much as we can for people here. Number one, because they like it better, number two, I enjoy doing all those things, number three, I think we do them really well. This is, in the truest sense, we are a general dentistry office because we do almost all things very, very well and try and do them for everybody rather than sending them somewhere else.

Dental Exams and Teeth Cleanings
Good dental health starts with dental exams and teeth cleaning services. A thorough exam is the best way to catch decay in its earliest stages and to detect other issues that can damage your family’s teeth.
We encourage you to bring in your child for the first dental exam at our Spokane Valley, WA dentist office before he or she enrolls in kindergarten. Then schedule them for exams every six months. Teeth cleaning helps eliminate harmful bacteria, which can cause tooth decay, gum disease, and other problems.
If you or your child is a little nervous about sitting in the patient chair, we are good at relieving dental anxiety.
Gum Disease Treatment
Without healthy gums, it is hard to have a healthy smile. While decay gets blamed for many dental ills, gum disease is a leading cause of tooth loss.
Teeth cleaning sometimes cannot remove bacteria that gets trapped between your teeth and gums. When that happens, gum disease can occur. Dr. Ellsworth uses a deep cleaning treatment called scaling and root planing to combat gum disease.
In the two-part treatment, he:
- Uses dental tools to remove plaque and tartar above and below your gumline
- Smoothes your tooth roots so harmful bacteria can’t grow there and so your gums more readily attach to your teeth
To make the treatment even more effective, Dr. Craig Ellsworth can place a time-released antibiotic called Arestin® under your gumline. It continues to fight the bacteria after your scaling and root planing treatment, reducing the likelihood that gum disease will return.

Thing that is changed dentistry a lot, is the advent of the laser. The main benefit to the lasers has been soft tissue, and with gum disease. There's different kinds of lasers. I've had three different types of lasers. Some of them that were supposed to do what they say we're gonna do, didn't work. Now I've gotten this third laser that I have. It's what's called a CO2 Laser. It works really, really well on soft tissue. It works very, very well with gum disease. I can treat somebody and do a surgical procedure with the laser, and do things that I couldn't do in the past.
It's clean, and it cleans things up. It sterilizes and disinfects all at the same time. It reduces where I wanna reduce, and it changes the shape of things that I wanna change the shape of. We use the laser extensively when we're doing gum therapy, non-surgical gum therapy. Allows us to do non-surgical gum treatment. A lot of things in the past had to be done surgically. We can change that a lot with lasers now. The CO2 Laser's been a huge deal. The higher-end lasers do really, really well, and what they say they're gonna do.
You want your young athletes to play hard, but you worry about the dental damage that can result from getting hit in the mouth with an elbow or ball. Dr. Craig Ellsworth can fit your competitors for athletic mouthguards that will be custom created for them.
Dry Mouth and Halitosis
Dry mouth is a condition that causes not only discomfort but embarrassment as well. A shortage of saliva allows dead cells to accumulate in your mouth, which often results in bad breath (halitosis). Dr. Craig Ellsworth can advise you on good dental hygiene to prevent dry mouth. He can also treat underlying conditions that can cause bad breath, like gum disease.
