Yeah, there's lot of people who have a hard time setting foot in the front door. I have several patients that I can think of right now, who they'll make a dental appointment, and they'll drive to the office, they'll park in the parking lot, they'll sit in their car. They're now five minutes late for their appointment, they're ten minutes late for their appointment. They'll drive around the block and come back and park again, because they can't get themselves to get out of the car and come into the office, that's how scared they are.
I mean, it could be for a ton of different reasons, maybe an experience a long time ago, maybe it's just something that's not even explainable. For whatever reason, that's what it's become for them. And it's not uncommon, everybody thinks that they're the only ones like that, they're not, there's a lot of people that are like that. Unfortunately there's a lot of people that are like that, and I feel horrible for them that they have to have that experience when it's not necessary. I know it's easy for me to say that it's not necessary, but with the sedation techniques that we have, with the relaxation techniques that we have, the oral sedation, we don't have to put you under anymore. We can do lots of different degrees of relaxation with small doses, to medium doses, to large doses, but doses where you're always breathing on your own, you can always talk to me, I can talk to you, but you don't really care.
People are skeptical, and they don't believe that it's going to work, and so they're still scared to death, but after the first or second time, it's amazing how many people were taking off of those drugs completely because they realize, "Hey this isn't so bad. I don't know what I was thinking. I don't know why I was that way." And it just works for them. Sedation is a nice thing, and the medications we have available to us are great, of course, it takes extra training to do that and that's why we do it, to help people out, because we know there's a significant amount of people out there who need that. It's something we offer. It's something we do. It's something we do for a lot of people, and it's changed a lot of people's lives because it's available now.

Conscious Dental Sedation
Many people find general anesthesia a stressful experience, yet they are not comfortable with heavier anesthesia alternatives that cause them to fall into a deep sleep. You can take comfort in Dr. Craig Ellsworth’s expertise in conscious dental sedation, which he administers with a pill.
With conscious dental sedation, you will typically remain awake but relaxed. If you do fall asleep, you are easily awakened. The effects may not wear off quickly, though, so you will want to get someone else to drive you home.
Family Dental of Spokane Valley’s technology makes you a more active participant in your family’s dental care. This gives you an added sense of control that can make your visit less stressful.
The technology we use includes:
- Intraoral camera. During your dental exam we use an intraoral camera, which enables you to see everything inside your mouth that Dr. Craig Ellsworth does. So rather than trying to just explain any problems, he can also show them to you.
- Digital X-ray. The X-ray technology we use produces clear digital images of your mouth that you can view immediately with Dr. Craig Ellsworth. And digital X-rays expose you and your family to less radiation than traditional X-rays.
To discover how conscious sedation and patient-friendly technology like digital X-rays can relieve your dental anxiety, call Family Dental of Spokane Valley at 509-850-3217 to make an appointment. Or use our online form.
